As we enter into the New Year with visions of tomorrow´s triumphs, eager to be swept aside by the tides of change, it is easy to forget. Easy to forget the seeds our past selves have sown, as we dream of blooming flowers in next year’s spring. We tell ourselves and each other that now is the time for the burning of the leaves – tomorrow´s wind will waste them all. And then we can start again, as a new candle burns brightly in the breeze again. Change blows in the cool wind, and our heads, hands and hearts hope for a fresh start.
But we should not forget, and we should not wish away the work of the year with such high zest. Rather, we must remember, value and cherish what has been done, and who has done it. That is what this vaguely poetic blog post will aim to do!
At Aldea, it would be difficult to name every single person that has helped us grow and nurtured our walls with their presence. The nature of having volunteers working is that the front door revolves with interested gringos and intrepid go-getters. We could not possibly name all of them, as to do would be a blog post of its own right! But nonetheless, we thank all of them for their endeavour, and the great spirit they bring to the hostel.
That being said, there are those that we can name. In fact, we might amend that to say there are those that we should name, and do not credit as much as they deserve. Such as Aurelia and Lilian, who clean the hostel tirelessly each and every day. Without their work, life at the hostel might not be as good as our wifi password suggests!
Then, praise must be given to those at the reception – Marlene, Arlene, Carlos, Kevin and Josue. Whether it is 5 37 am or 11 24 pm, these people are on hand to help. Many a guest has been shown to a room, shared in friendly conversation or been given directions by these individuals.
And perhaps they have even been given directions just next door – to the Corner Pizzeria next to the hostel. Here, these guests might meet the charms of Heylin, the mastery of Pedro, or the mystery of Rafa. Certainly they shall feel the radiance of Aleja also, and the care of our Andrea. Regardless of who it is they chance to encounter, they are sure to have had an excellent time, and for this our staff deserve the highest praise possible and the purest vidas ever!
We hope that you have enjoyed the past year as much as we have, and that the key characters in your lives know how much you cherish the work they do. At the end of a film, everyone involved gets a moment in the lights. A second on the silver screen. These are our heroes, this hostel our film. These have been the end credits. Cut lights. Exit, stage left. All that remains is to say this: Feliz Nuevo Ano y PURA VIDA.Read more »
